Re: I need a script to log into guest OS desktop, similar to option in guest customization wizard

What is the error message you are getting back ?

And do you run the script where you call the Invoke-VMScript from a 32-bit or a 64-bit PowerCLI session ?

Re: ESXi 5.1 management network no connectivity with two nics connected

The IBM BladeCenter H chassis has two BNT Layer 2/3 Modules. The HS22 has two gigabit network adapters (Broadcom 5709S). The way the chassis works is one adapter gets mapped to BNT module in bay 1 and the other adapter gets mapped to BNT module in bay 2. This creates a separate switch scenario, which means LACP does not work. This did not seem to be an issue in ESXi 5.0 but appears to be the break point in 5.1. Any ideas?

Re: Initiate Orchestrator workflow via REST/Post with JSON body

Burke - status code 415 indicates mismatch in the media type, which is expected because there is no Content-Type header

KeyboardSlappingMonkey - I think the request body should be something like the following (note the difference in the value format)

{"parameters":[{"name":"datacenterName","type":"string","value":{"string":{"value":"TestDC2"}}},{"name":"customerVMFolder","type":"string","value":{"string":{"value":"KamTestFolder"}}}]}

and you need to pass Content-Type header with value application/json;v=5.1.1

Hope this helps.

I had one of our guys who's never logged on to the vcenter box, logon with his domain creds just fine. I'll go through the domain hoops after I reboot it one more time.

post reboot I see event id 1000's for each group that has permissions in vcenter in the app log (while logged on to the vcenter server with a domain account):

"

The description for Event ID 1000 from source VMware VirtualCenter Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

The group account "DOMAIN\Group" could not be successfully resolved.  Check network connectivity to domain controllers and domain membership.  Users may not be able to log in until connectivity is restored.

the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table "

When I logon to vcenter as local admin and attempt to add a permission to vcenter I get:

Call "UserDirectory.RetrieveUserGroups" for object "UserDirectory" on vCenter Server "servername" failed.

This could be trying to do an AD lookup with local admin I guess.

OK I guess I'm going to have to do the domain thing now.. seems silly.

GOT IT!! Okay, two things I had error with:

1) In that last couple attempts, I had the body wrong - I had specified input-parameters instead of "parameters"

2) json value format

After updating those two and re-adding the Content-Type=application/json:v5.1.1, my simple test using the RESTClient in Mozilla Firefox successfully launched the workflow in vCO 5.1.1 Virtual Appliance:

Thanks Mark,

I can't see them under ESXtop at this stage but may be looking in wrong spot. If I go ESXtop and specify U for disk device I see my NFS volumes but not the stats you mention. Toggling the fields do not seem to help either. I don't seem to capture anything in batch mode either. Can you expand on how you captured them please?

Cheers

Duh, I should have thought to look at the json format of an existing workflow execution - it clearly shows the proper format of the value field. I should have caught that as that was the technique I had used when learning how to deal with the SOAP API of vCO a while back.. guess I'm just rusty calling in to vCO via the API since I spend so much time calling out from it

Since you mentions LACP, how did you configure the port group/vSwitch policy. With separate switches (i.e. not stacked), you should be using the default policy (Port based) with the physical switch ports setup as either access/tagged or trunk/untagged ports.

You cannot login to the vCO client using "vmware" - that account is for the Configuration Page only. In order to login to the vCO client, you must use an account from the LDAP/SSO you specified in the configuration for the Authentication section.

If this were the appliance using the built-in OpenLDAP for authentication, you could login with the default account vcoadmin and pw vcoadmin... however, from your logs it seems you are using Windows installed vCO. In this case, during your authentication setup, you had to specify a group for your vCO Administrators. When logging into the vCO Client, you need to use a credential that is a member of that group.

The SSH error you have appears to indicate that you are attempting to connect to a host that does not have SSH listening OR you are trying to connect with an account that does not have SSH access.

As for your other errors, not sure what the deal is there - corrupt install?? How much memory does your Windows server have? It must be 4GB or more...

I need the lightbulb emoticon! So after almost 20 years in IT I should know that when things break after changing a password I should be suspicious of where those creds might be hidden.

So if I logon to the web client as the SSO admin admin@System-Domain and go to Administration > SSO > Configuration and click edit the AD Identity source, my elevated domain account which I changed my password this morning is in that dialog. I was told by vmware tech support on a ticket last month that those credentials were only used on the first connection to ldap.. how wrong he was. It looks like I need to use an account who's password does not change every 90 days!  Putting my new password into that field makes vcenter work just fine with domain accounts!! I don't think rejoining the domain would make any difference.

SSO does indeed play a part in client connectivity.

Is it possible that VMWare has a limit of 2TB for files?

SSO can't survive a simple reboot... correction can't survive a password change!?

I've built up a development 5.1 environment with a few hosts and vcenter running on a Windows 2008r2 vm (on a different cluster). I'm running all services including SQL express on the VM. After many fits and starts I've had a decently running vcenter service. Today I needed to reboot vcenter because it was dog slow (Thank you JAVA!!!) and add some more memory.

Now I'm unable to authenticate via the web client or the fat client. I've restarted the SSO service ("thanks" for naming that service starting with vcenter unlike ALL the other services vmware) per kb 2033137.

Fat client error is: "a general system error occured: Authorize Exception

web client error is: The authentication server returned an unexpected error: ns0:RequestFailed: Failed to connect to the identity source. Possible reasons include invalid user name or password, connection refusal, connection timeout, or failure to resolve hostname. The error may be caused by a malfunctioning identity source.

Judging by the plethora of threads about SSO on the forums I'm going to step out on a limb and say this service "aint ready for primetime" and I'm sure glad I don't have a production environment on 5.1 yet!

The original script from Raiders of the Lost VMX allows clusters on the entityName parameter and with the WhatIf switch it will only list the VMX files of unregistered VMs it finds.

Re: Powershell/PowerCLI Dynamic Email Message Body with Datastores

Fabien, not sure if you can help through this same thread. You helped me with the script and output sorts by PercFree. I did added another column to reflect FreeSpace on the following function:

Function Report-Datastore {

    $output = @()

    Get-Datastore | ForEach-Object {$props = [ordered]@{'Name'=$_.Name;'FreeSpace'=[math]::Round(($_.FreeSpaceGB),2);'UsedSpace'=[math]::Round(($_.CapacityGB - $_.FreeSpaceGB),2);'PercFree'=[math]::Round((100 * ($_.FreeSpaceGB/$_.CapacityGB)),0)}

        $output += New-Object -TypeName PSCUstomObject -Property $props

    }

    $output

}

But i added the sort-object FreeSpaceGB in HTML code section and does not sort.

$html_DS = Report-Datastore | Sort-Object FreeSpaceGB | ConvertTo-HTML -Fragment | Out-String | Set-AlternatingCSSClasses -CSSEvenClass 'even' -CssOddClass 'odd'

#$html_DS = Report-Datastore | Sort-Object PercFree | ConvertTo-HTML -Fragment | Out-String | Set-AlternatingCSSClasses -CSSEvenClass 'even' -CssOddClass 'odd'

The following is the output of the body email. Thanks for your help

Re: Migration Host on 2 SANs and 2 vMotion Network

Hi,

Is management network and vmotion network is on different subnet. If yes, if it required different route then you can add static route to ESXI host using command line. Also you can enable and disable hot migration option in advance setting to ESXI host.  Also at percentage  vmotion fails. Does vmkping  between the host work ?
