The content of your RDMs will make a big difference.
If the RDM is filled with lots of small files robocopy will be quite slow.
On the other hand robocopy may be the fastest option if you have the RDM only partially filed or have it filled with large files.

Well, ps -aux | grep vmnet8 resulted in

I changed the network editor to use vmnet 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 and it seems to be working ok through multiple reboots. Thank you.
I was hasty. Now I'm getting Could not connect 'Ethernet0' to virtual network '/dev/vmnet2'. THis happens over and over. I can switch what vmnets are used in the network editor and then fix whatever VM I'm about to use and it will work past maybe 2 reboots. It did the same in Windows until the creator's update out-of-memory bug made me come to Linux. This is ridiculous. Newest log is attached again.

I don't have a debug log to share, but I have seen delays in the logs.
I'm going down the road of trying to disable OpLocks in our Isilon cluster.
Our Isilon SMB share is behind about 30 IP addresses (nodes) and the TTL is around Zero. (Every time you ping, you get a different IP address.)
I'm thinking that the nature of the UEM product is to connect/reconnect as it accesses the zip files, and Oplocks may be interfering.
I know that I battle the UEM console, and suffer from File Locks while trying to edit/save the .ini files. I'm hoping this is the issue, because I can't think of anything else.
If not, I will put it behind some DFS shares in VCenter.

When ever you install a guestOS using the "easy install" approach Workstation adds a virtual floppy drive to the virtual hardware.
Some times those virtual floppy drives are not removed once the installation is done.
If you find a file name autoinst.flp or similar in the same directory of the vmx-file then you have a leftover device from "easy install"
To verify this - ignore the GUI-display and rather examine the vmx-file.
To remove a floppy drive just set
floppy0.present = "false"

As the post above mine here suggests V2V (VMware Converter -> VMware vCenter Converter Standalone ) is also a good option.
There is no "best practice" as far as I can tell. Many roads lead to rome as the saying goes.
You need to figure out which approach you are the most comfortable with. How many VMs do you need to move?
You should plan downtime for all the VMs involved and then copy them with one of the approaches mentioned to the new vCenter server.

Thanks so much for your response, really appreciate it! Should have said that but i did those things already and the symptom was unchanged.
the problem is probably self inflicted, maybe my ISO of VMware tools doesnt match my VMware (had to download a new tools from a VMware trial band cause I couldn't find it inside my proper install anymore) and my guest VM was the Microsoft one for testing the Edge browser - maybe it had an incompatible VMware tools already I'm not sure because by the time I thought about it I'd already tried installing it again and then I tried uninstalling it etc)
anyways, i don't have the VM anymore and haven't tried with another one. Thanks a lot for the response though and hope others don't bump into the same issue.

Thanks for the reply.
Using the commands you provided, I disabled the ESXi firewall. However, I received the same "Permission Denied" message.
As for Roles, connecting to the ESXi host via the vSphere Client, it is greyed out (Administration>Role).
I tried use the following command to check Roles:
vicfg-user.pl --server x.x.x.x --username "ABCD" --password "changeme"
But, I get an error.
Am I using the vicfg-user command correctly?

Sure you can. Follow the steps below.
1. On the User Environment tab click "Manage Templates".
2. Add the word14.admx file using the "Add File..." button.
3. Click Close
4. Right click "ADMX-based Settings" and click "Create ADMX-based Settings definition..."
5. Enter the name you wish to use for the settings and click "Select Categories..."
6. Under User Configuration --> Policies --> Administrative Templates --> Microsoft Word 2010 --> Word Options --> Security --> Trust Center , select (tick) "Trusted Locations" and click "OK".
7. Click "Edit Policies..."
8. Under Microsoft Word 2010 --> Word Options --> Security --> Trust Center --> Trusted Locations , configure the required settings.
9. Use the close button [X] (top right corner)
10. Optionally, use the Conditions tab to specifically target the configured policies.

Dont assume that OVA works between different ESXi versions.
As OVA-packages are basically obscured tarballs - just extract the package you have from commandline and if necessary create a vmx-file manually.

Just to give my 2 cents here. we have seen this issue on many occasions and it affects even the latest build of esxi (6.5). On customer in particular still has this issue. Due to the snapshots not being deleted they suffered severe performance issues on the applications running on those vms. The customer used commvault for backup which uses "proxy" vms to do the backup. In every case the lock was on one of the backup servers.
Did you try to restart the backup server/vm and then try to consolidate again?
this issue seems to affect most backup solutions out there and it does not seem to matter which method they use (hot-add or the vapd)
we are still trying to find a permanent solution for the customer i mentioned and the backup vendor is investigating as well but so far there is no permanent fix.

In my experience if you connect to a esxi host directly you use the root account which is like the administrator on a windows machine.
do you know the root password of your host? can you try with that account?
if the permission denied is still there when you use the root account I'd say the issue is on your windows machine. I'd try to give "everyone" write access to that folder on your d: drive and try again.
I actually never used the vifg-user.pl command. Looking at the documentation (vSphere 6.0 Documentation Center ) it seems to be intended to manage users and not to test a login or determine the role of a user. But I could be mistaken of course

I'm curious about the same thing. We're migrating from 6.2 to 7.3. In 6.2 we had to use ASD as there was no way to change the reservation policy in the workflow stubs after submission of the request. We're trying to determine if we can do this via the event broker or if we have to use XAAS in 7.3. Please post if you find a solution to this via event broker or if you have to go the XAAS route.
